Every Alaskan has the right to be protected from the threat of violence and crime. I will support law enforcement working with local community groups and individuals. I will support adequate funding for our Troopers and Village Public Safety Officers.
Alaskans must be protected from the scourges of drunk driving, domestic violence, and other violent crime. Law enforcement officers in our state will tell you that 90 percent of Alaskan crimes involve alcohol and drug abuse. Our prison system is over capacity and costing Alaskans hundreds of millions of dollars because of this pervasive substance abuse problem.
As Governor, I will not tolerate the disconnect between strengthening public safety and alcohol and drug abuse in Alaska. I will be tough on crime and improve Alaska's treatment programs.
