Our state must provide accountable and relevant education opportunities for all our citizens so that they can achieve their goal to build careers in Alaska. We must fully fund an education system that meets the needs of our citizens-old and young. We cannot be satisfied until every Alaskan has the opportunity to meet their educational and career goals. We must refocus our assets on the classroom. It is the teachers who can make the most positive influence in children's education. In an increasingly competitive global environment, we must assure our methods of teaching embrace the latest technology to better prepare our youth for tomorrow's good paying job opportunities. Education in Alaska has changed significantly over the last decade. More families are choosing alternative methods of instruction such as charter schools, home schools, correspondence studies, and even boarding schools. It is the State's responsibility to assure that a quality education is available to all students. We must continue to provide for these alternatives now being sought by so many families while strengthening our traditional public schools. We must be responsive and not fear alternative and effective methods of instruction. After all, our common goal is to provide the very best education to each Alaskan student through those programs that are most effective. Whether our students pursue vocational training or post-secondary education at a community college or the University of Alaska, they must be prepared. We have a system of strong locally controlled school boards in our State. We must protect their authority to set their own education agenda for their respective communities. We should stop unfunded mandates and burdensome regulations that detract from the purpose of educating our kids. We have to let the teachers teach, unburdened by disciplinary problems.
