The fiscal problem Alaska faces today is one of rapidly increasing spending. We must resist the pressure to spend more, simply because the price of oil is high. Experience shows us that not only are prices volatile but production is falling. We must save now in order to adequately fund our budgets in the future. I am committed to a responsible approach to budgeting.
My priority is to operate an effective and efficient government and fund it in a manner that has the least impact on working families. Taxing working families or taking their permanent fund dividend will not happen under my administration.
As Governor I will take responsibility to control state spending by prioritizing expenditures and by achieving efficiencies. State agencies must be challenged to identify improved methods and means of delivering necessary services. We must manage the delivery of state services to be as efficient as possible.
I will hire only those who are committed to this philosophy and will help me to achieve our budgetary goals. I will bring a new attitude to the budget process and I will work effectively with the Legislature to establish a responsible fiscal plan.
